City Square Mall is inviting visitors to a new official heritage tour exploring the historic grounds of the former New World Amusement Park. Commissioned by City Square Mall and conducted by Hidden Heritage, the 1.5-hour experience traces how the district evolved from one of Singapore’s best-known entertainment hubs into the vibrant modern family-friendly destination it is today.
Long before shopping centres and modern cinemas, the area was alive with music, performances and late-night entertainment. The legendary New World Amusement Park drew people from all walks of life, from working families and sailors to performers and cabaret patrons, making it an important gathering place in Singapore’s social landscape.
The guided walk retraces the footprint of the former amusement park and uncovers stories of the nightlife and leisure culture that once defined the neighbourhood. Along the way, participants will explore conserved shophouses, hidden temples and familiar food streets, while comparing archival photographs with the present-day surroundings and getting a closer look at historical artefacts.
As traces of the past emerge amid the modern streetscape, the tour offers a fresh perspective on the area’s transformation through the decades. By the end of the journey, City Square Mall takes on a new meaning, not simply as a shopping destination, but as the latest chapter in a long-running story of leisure, community and entertainment that continues to shape the neighbourhood today.
