Copthorne
Birmingham
After 34 Years

Contributed by Ms Charlotte Jones, Cluster HR & Development Manager for Copthorne Cardiff, Copthorne Plymouth and Copthorne Merry Hill-Dudley.

On 19 August 2021, the sale of Copthorne Birmingham successfully completed and the hotel closed its doors for the final time after 34 years. The hotel has been a part of Millennium Hotels and Resorts’ (MHR) history since 1987 and since its opening, has been one of the most successful and profitable businesses in Birmingham City Centre!

All of the outgoing team’s planning and hard work came to a fruitful end on 19 August, with the majority of them having successfully secured roles within the hospitality industry in the city and will carry on delivering the great service they perfected at Copthorne Birmingham.

Five team members have also remained with MHR and transferred to new roles in the UK –Copthorne Birmingham and Merry Hill-Dudley Cluster Financial Controller Mr Stuart Russell is now Copthorne Merry Hill-Dudley Financial Controller and Procurement Manager (UK); Copthorne Birmingham Assistant Financial Controller Mr Ian Davies is now Assistant Procurement Manager (UK); Copthorne Birmingham and Merry Hill-Dudley Cluster HR & Development Manager Ms Charlotte Jones is now Copthorne Cardiff, Plymouth and Merry Hill-Dudley Cluster HR & Development Manager; Copthorne Birmingham Shift Engineer Mr Mark Orchard is now Copthorne Merry Hill-Dudley Maintenance Technician; and Copthorne Birmingham Night Duty Manager Mr Dalmar Sheikh is now Copthorne Merry Hill-Dudley Assistant Front Office Manager.

A final look at the hotel – the property is earmarked for demolition sometime in the next 12 months.

As the hotel shut its doors, as much furniture as possible and other non-transferrable assets were donated to local charities, such as the British Heart Foundation and some local hospitality start-up businesses – it is nice to know that the essence of Copthorne Birmingham will now live on in these new establishments and form part of their history!

For reminiscing, here are some photos of the now-empty hotel, which is earmarked for demolition sometime in the next 12 months:

The meeting and venue spaces (left) and restaurant areas have also been cleared out, with furniture and other assets donated to local charities and businesses.
