Singaporeans
From Los Angeles to Beijing, overseas Singaporeans gathered to celebrate their country’s National Day. Taking place every year on August 9, the special day commemorates Singapore's independence from Malaysia in the year 1965.
Grand Millennium Beijing
It was a feast for all the senses when Grand Millennium Beijing’s ballroom was transformed into a little slice of Singapore for a few hours. About 360 guests attended the Singapore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China's (SingCham) annual National Day Dinner.
The singing of Singapore’s National Anthem and other patriotic songs set the mood for the night’s celebration. Guests tucked into a spread of classic dishes such as fish curry, chicken rice and chap chye, prepared by chefs specially flown from Orchard Hotel in Singapore.
Singapore's Ambassador to China Mr Stanley Loh, who was guest of honour at the event, said relations between the two countries have continued to strengthen, and thanked SingCham for its role as a reliable partner in this area.
Millennium Seoul Hilton
The Singaporean Ambassador to Korea, His Excellency Mr Yip Wei Kiat, invited Singaporean nationals in Seoul to a celebration at Millennium Seoul Hilton's Atrium on 11 August. Guests had a chance to enjoy authentic Singaporean cuisine while mingling with fellow Singaporeans.
Millennium Biltmore Los Angeles
In celebration of Singapore’s 53rd birthday, Bugis Street Brasserie at Millennium Biltmore Los Angeles hosted a group of 60 revellers from Downtown L.A. and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Celebrants were joined by Mr Jimmy Wu, general manager and owner’s representative of Millennium Biltmore, and organiser Mr Stanley Leong, Senior Assistant Director (Overseas Programs & Partnerships) for the Overseas Singaporean Unit of the Office for Citizen Engagement of Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.
Singaporeans begin celebrations during the latter part of July and continue throughout August. The celebrations include concerts, carnivals, and many other festivities. With its roots inspired by the original Bugis Street in Singapore, the L.A. Brasserie represents an ideal location for authentic Singaporean fare.
