In collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department, Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur held a safety workshop for underprivileged children.

Close to 80 children aged six to 19 from the Rumah Kasih Nurul Hasanah halfway house, Humanitarian Aid Selangor Society, and Ti-Ratana Welfare Society and Shelter Home for Children were at the workshop. The session was aimed at empowering children to take care of their own safety and to educate them to be more vigilant.

Firefighters shared information such as fire safety tips for home, emergency evacuation plans, firefighting methods and types and causes of fire incidents. Children also got to try hands-on activities such as learning the stop-drop-roll fire safety technique and how to use the fire extinguisher.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department Director Tuan Haji Khirudin Drahman said, “Children need to learn so much more than the meaning of stop signs, traffic signals and how to safely cross a street. If a child’s clothing caught on fire, what should they do? They simply need to know some vital skills and strategies so they can recognise a thumbs down situation. The syllabus of this workshop was developed in a way to explain the simple safety rules which are applicable in their daily lives and it is a great opportunity for them to learn up-close.”

“More often than not, due to lack of information many people suffer losses. Thus we believe raising awareness about safety and security, and imparting valuable knowledge to these children from young will help curb accidents and dangers they may potentially encounter in the future. This is our first time collaborating with the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department and we are truly thankful for their support in making this event a success. With this, we hope these young children will be able to protect themselves and make informed decisions during emergency situations,” said Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur General Manager Mr Peter Gibbons.

As part of the programme, the hotel also organised a colouring contest for the younger children aged six to 12. The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony at the hotel’s Millennium Ballroom, and a buffet dinner at the hotel’s The Mill CafĂ©.
