Isolation Stay

M Social Auckland is one of New Zealand’s managed isolation, or compulsory quarantine, facilities, and New Zealanders completing their mandatory stay are being given a “very jovial” stay and exit thanks to the hotel team.

Kiwis who have completed their 14-day quarantine stay are given a framed certificate, and are “clapped out” by hotel staff.

M Social Auckland General Manager Mr Nigel Edwards told Stuff, New Zealand’s largest online news platform, that the certificate was a token gift for guests to mark this historic event and to provide a sense of achievement.

He said, “The entire experience for the guests will be something they will recall and the certificate will facilitate the story they can tell generations to come. We try to make the exit a memorable one, the hotel and agency team are there, I or my senior team present the certificate, and we clap them out.”

The team came up with the idea and started giving out the quirky quarantine certificates in August.

Mr Edwards added, “The response is very good and marks the end of their isolation in a very jovial way.”

The certificates are a hotel initiative, and all Kiwis returning from abroad are also given an official letter of managed isolation attendance by the New Zealand government on their departure.

In addition to the certificates and clapping, M Social Auckland has also been coming up with creative ways to keep guests entertained while they remain in managed isolation, such as coffees, cupcakes and crosswords.

During Maori language week from 14 to 20 September, the hotel prepared some word search puzzles in Maori language, also known as ‘te reo’.

The hotel prepared cupcakes for guests to celebrate when 50,000 Kiwis had returned and gone through managed isolation.

Free movie nights were also held to keep guests entertained, with the hotel preparing complimentary snack boxes.
