The inaugural Kids Aquathlon, which was part of Millennium Resort Mussanah’s annual Millennium Triathlon, took place on 22 September. Comprising a 50m swim in the resort’s family pool and a 300m dash, 77 children took part and completed the course while their family members and resort staff cheered them on.
For the adult’s triathlon event, the resort welcomed 53 athletes who completed a Sprint course, which consists of a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. A Sprint course is half the standard Olympic distance. In addition to individual categories, participants could form a team of three, with each participant covering one segment of the race.
The athletes were treated to beautiful views of the Al Hajjah Mountains and Batinah Coast as they completed the course.
For ‘Individual Sprint’, the first-place winners were Mr Gary Cummings from the UK and Ms Franzel Cilliers from South Africa for the men’s and women’s categories respectively. Millennium Resort Mussanah also sent in two teams, and Team A, comprising Mr Asanka Wimalsooriya, Mr Fahad Alhdani and Mr Yousuf Alamrani, who did the swim, bike and run segments respectively, came in second.
Millennium Resort Mussanah General Manager Mr Dermot Birchall said, “I would like to congratulate our winners and thank everyone for participating for showing the grit, determination and willpower that make triathlon such an amazing event. The incredible workouts and experience they gained in preparation and during the race will serve them far beyond today’s event by providing them with a platform to achieve future success.”
The Millennium Triathlon is in its fourth year and is held in association with Triathlon Middle East.
