City Square Mall’s sustainability push has earned multiple accolades, including the BCA Green Mark Platinum Awards (2018, 2021, 2024), BCA Green Mark Pearl Awards, BCA–MSF Universal Design Mark Platinum, ASEAN Energy Awards, and FuturArc Green Leadership Award.
A Mall Made
For The Future:
Eco Design,
Smart Features
And Greener Habits
If Mother Earth had a favourite mall, this might just be it. City Square Mall has recently undergone a thoughtful eco-upgrade, transforming everyday spaces into sustainability showcases without losing any of its convenience or charm.
From the moment you enter, upcycled materials take centre stage. What used to be bamboo chopsticks, PET bottles, and bubble wrap now line the walls as attractive and durable cladding. Timber grab bars have been reborn as benches for tired feet and mindful pauses.
Instead of letting unwanted materials go to waste, City Square Mall turned it into upcycled green decorations that tell a story.
Beyond aesthetics, the mall is running a quiet green revolution behind the scenes — solar panels on the roof, rainwater harvesting for landscaping, recycling and e-waste bins throughout, EV charging lots, LED façade lighting and even a food waste eco-digester.
Step outside to City Green Park and you will find two conversation-starters: the CDL EcoTrain, a retired MRT cabin turned into a solar-powered learning space, and the CDL MicroForest, Singapore’s first research-based regenerative mini-forest planted to cool the urban climate and boost biodiversity.
CDL unveiled the CDL EcoTrain in March 2025 as Singapore’s first decommissioned SMRT train cabin repurposed for sustainability education.
The Tree Planting Ceremony at the CDL MicroForest was graced by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, along with CDL’s senior management team, representatives from NUS, NParks, and JKT, as well as young eco-champions from CDL’s “We Love Our Planet” storytelling contest.
Further up on Level 6, the Singapore Sustainability Academy (SSA) brings together youth, industry and community partners to spark environmental action and innovation.
Even everyday shopping gets a green twist. FairPrice’s most sustainable outlet offers over 400 eco-products; Decathlon gives used sports gear a second life; textile and e-waste drop-off points encourage responsible habits; and a water refill station nudges visitors to ditch disposable bottles.
SSA sits on level 6 of City Square Mall where real action for a greener tomorrow takes place. The academy brings together industries, youths and communities to learn, share and build partnerships that bring the Singapore Green Plan 2030 to life.
City Square Mall’s sustainability journey hasn’t gone unnoticed with awards ranging from multiple BCA Green Mark Platinum to regional environmental accolades and record-setting festive displays crafted from repurposed materials.
The next time you drop by for dinner, errands, or a family day out, you will be walking through a little blueprint of greener city living — one level at a time!
