ON SEPTEMBER 30, Copthorne Tara opened its doors to forty children survivors and their families of the devastating Grenfell Tower fire, which happened in June 2017.

The children, aged five to 16, got to be “hospitality masters” that afternoon, setting up tea in the hotel’s Shannon Suite while decked out in aprons and chef hats. They also enjoyed activities hotel staff prepared, such as face painting, balloon sculpting, and cupcake and waffle decorating competitions.

Later in the afternoon, the children and their families dined on a delicious afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, home-baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, and a selection of mini desserts.

The children turned into “hospitality masters” for the day and helped to set up the tea party for their families while dressed up in aprons and chef hats.

Copthorne Tara also planned a slew of activities for the children, which included a waffle decorating competition, where kids tried to outdo each other’s designs with a variety of toppings such as honey, chocolate wafers and flower-shaped biscuits.

General Manager Mr Nathan White said, “All these children and their families lost their homes in the unfortunate fire and stayed at the Copthorne Tara temporarily until they were rehomed. With the start of the new school year, we felt it was important to show these children that their ordeal hasn’t been forgotten and that we continue to stand by them. Copthorne Tara has been a major presence in the Kensington community and we take pride in providing support to vulnerable residents and disadvantaged. We are happy to provide these kids with an insight into the world of hospitality, by giving them the opportunity to work alongside our staff in preparing a wonderful afternoon tea for their families, and at the same time having a fun time.”

The event was organised with support from Grenfell United, a group of survivors and bereaved families of the Grenfell Tower fire working together for their community and campaigning for safe homes. The Grenfell Tower fire is UK’s deadliest structural fire and the worst residential fire in the UK since World War II, with 72 deaths and 151 homes destroyed.
