Hosts The
Sailing Olympic
Qualifier

In early April, Millennium Resort Mussanah in Oman welcomed sailors from across Africa, Asia and Europe for the Mussanah Open Championship. Some 102 sailors from 17 countries competed in 49er, 49er FX, Laser, Laser Radial and RS:X classes to secure their place at this year’s long-awaited Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The Mussanah Open Championship is the final qualification event for the Olympic Games and was allocated Olympic qualification status by World Sailing to substitute for postponed events throughout 2020, allowing sailors the opportunity to confirm their spot in the Games in a safe and competitive environment. World Sailing is the global governing body for sailing and is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. Everyone involved in the Championship had been tested upon arrival and regularly throughout the six-day event to create a secure bubble.

Millennium Resort Mussanah, situated along the waterfront, was the official venue for the sailing championship, which saw six days of exhilarating action on the water. Participants were also able to enjoy all the facilities at the resort, which includes a private beach, four swimming pools, restaurants and bars, and a private marina with direct access to the Gulf of Oman.

Millennium Resort Mussanah General Manager Mr Dermot Birchall said, “We are extremely proud to be a part of this prestigious event. We are driven to offer the best service to our guests, the champions. Surrounded by the Gulf of Oman, and the Arabian Sea; it makes Oman the perfect destination to host such events.”
