In April, Hong Leong Group Sports and Recreation Club (HLGSRC) organised two kayaking adventures in Singapore. Taking place on 11 and 26 April, some 22 Hong Leong Group staff, friends and family members embarked on trips to Pulau Ubin and Simpang River.

The trip to Pulau Ubin was an adventurous one, with kayakers paddling for nearly five hours, exploring dense mangroves and canopied creeks around the island off Singapore’s mainland. Pulau Ubin is an island north-east of Singapore, one of the last areas preserved from urban development, with the rivers within only accessible via kayaks. The route spanned around 12km going through waterways such as Sungei Jelutong, with some sightings of birds along the way, though (fortunately) no monitor lizards or snakes were spotted!

The Simpang River trail led paddlers on a 7.5km journey through one of Singapore’s last riverine mangroves. Despite the heavy rain, participants still had fun learning about the flora and fauna in these mangrove swamps, such as Giant Fig, snails, lobsters, baby mangroves and cannonball-shaped fruits known as nature’s Rubik’s Cube!
