The town of Taupo in New Zealand was “overrun” with Scottish folk in May as the Davidson Clan Society celebrated their annual gathering. The Clan was believed to have originated in the Scottish Highlands in the 14th century, and the Society was formed in New Zealand 20 years ago.

The Society hosted their clan meeting and ceilidh at Millennium Hotel and Resort Manuels Taupo over a weekend. A ceilidh is a traditional Scottish social gathering, and in modern settings often involve dancing and music. It started with “a Dram with the Chief” at the hotel’s Lakefront Lounge Bar hosted by Mr Grant Guthrie Davidson, Hereditary Chief of the Davidson Clan Society.

The next evening, Society members and members of the Taupo community attended they dinner, where they watched the piping of haggis (a savoury pudding containing sheep offal with herbs and spices, is served with a bagpiper leading the way and followed by an entourage of Scotsmen) and enjoyed an evening of Scottish dancing and entertainment.
