It was a Broadway star-studded evening at Millennium Biltmore Los Angeles, as the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) held its 28th Annual Theatre Awards to honour the best of black theatre.

About 600 guests attended the event, walking the red carpet in the hotel’s South Galleria, before adjourning to the Biltmore Bowl for the awards dinner, the same venue where past Academy Awards were hosted.

The awards were hosted by comedian and television host Loni Love, and presenters included Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom, singer and former Disney star Raven-Symoné, and actor Richard Roundtree who is best known for his lead role in the action film series ‘Shaft’. The top winner was ‘Born For This: A New Musical’, which picked up five awards out of 13 nominations, while the ‘Trailblazer Award’ went to actress Viola Davis, the first African-American actor to earn the Triple Crown of Acting (an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, and a Tony Award).
