Copthorne Tara welcomed 16 national rugby teams for the penultimate round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, which took place at Twickenham Stadium in London.

The World Rugby Sevens Series is an annual series of international rugby sevens tournaments (played with seven players a side playing seven minute halves, instead of the conventional 15 players playing 40 minute halves), sponsored by banking group HSBC. There are a total of 21 national teams, including 15 ‘core teams’ that were selected based on their performances in the previous season. At the London Games, a total of 16 teams played, and were all hosted at Copthorne Tara, where they stayed for a total of 1,260 room nights.

The 16 national teams are from England, Australia, Argentina, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Wales, Japan, Kenya, Fiji, France, and the USA. They played in four pools before the winners moved onto the quarterfinals, and semi-finals. The finals were played between Fiji and Australia, with the former emerging champions with a 43-7 score.
