It is a grand welcome back to Grosvenor Square for Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur Jason Atherton, who will be launching his newest dining establishment, The Betterment, at The Biltmore, Mayfair, in London.

He was last in the area as Executive Chef of Maze Grill, which he launched with Gordon Ramsay in 2005. Atherton had called it quits with Ramsay in 2010 amid an acrimonious financial dispute over Maze, setting up his own restaurant group The Social Company.

Gordon Ramsay is a British Michelin-starred chef, restaurateur and television personality known for his fiery temper and popular cooking programmes such as ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and ‘Masterchef US’.

Atherton then opened his first solo venture Pollen Street Social in Mayfair in April 2011. The restaurant was awarded a Michelin star just six months in, a testament to his talent. The culinary star, who has worked under acclaimed chefs including Pierre Koffman (behind three Michelin star restaurant La Tante Claire) and Nico Ladenis (who opened three Michelin star restaurant Chez Nico), now has 18 restaurants under his belt in eight cities around the world and a handful of Michelin stars.

In addition to his culinary accolades, Jason Atherton also found fame on the small screen. His return to Grosvenor Square will also see a new rivalry with former boss and mentor Gordon Ramsay, who has just opened his new Asian venture Lucky Cat on the other end of the square. Though they did not part on good terms, Atherton maintains that “there was never any malice on [his] side” and that he would not be who he was today without spending 12 years with Ramsay.

The Betterment will be helmed by Head Chef Paul Walsh, who also launched and led Atherton’s London restaurant City Social for five years and achieved the restaurant’s Michelin-starred status within seven months of its opening.

The Betterment’s seasonally driven menu will feature beautifully presented dishes of wood-fired fish and meats, fresh seafood, signature salads, and plant-based plates. At the heart of the restaurant will be a dramatic and rustic open grill, which will bring the kitchen into the dining room and add a sense of theatre to the space.

Three other dining establishments at The Biltmore, Mayfair – The Terrace, The Tea Lounge, and The Pine Bar – will also be overseen by Atherton.

He commented, “To be working on the launch of The Betterment at The Biltmore, Mayfair is incredibly exciting. When we were approached by Mr Kwek Leng Beng, Chairman of Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc, owner of The Biltmore, Mayfair, we just knew it was an opportunity we couldn’t let pass.”

“We chose the name The Betterment to encapsulate our journey from opening Pollen Street Social in 2011 to today, highlighting the progression of our food, ethos and way of thinking. To be returning to Mayfair’s Grosvenor Square after nine years is very special to me, and I’m thrilled to be doing it alongside world-class chef and friend, Paul Walsh,” he added.
