Despite the heavy downpour, more than 300 senior management and employee volunteers across City Developments Limited (CDL) and its subsidiaries, Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc (M&C) and CBM Pte Ltd, braved the rain and  raised nearly S$200,000 for the Assisi Fun Day. The annual event is the Hospice’s biggest fundraising event of the year and hopes to raise S$1 million this year. Proceeds go towards supporting the palliative care of over 2,000 terminally ill patients yearly at the Assisi Hospice.

The highlight of the event was a charity trishaw ride where CDL Deputy CEO Mr Sherman Kwek ferried one of the Sisters from Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM) and granddaughter of a patient, to much cheer from the crowd. This segment alone raised over S$76,000 for the Hospice.

In a spontaneous turn of events, Guest of Honour and Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen also gave Mr Kwek and Patron of Assisi Hospice, Madam Ho Ching a ride on the trishaw. Madam Ho is the CEO of sovereign wealth fund, Temasek Holdings. She is also the wife of Singapore Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong.

One of the highlights of the Assisi Fun Day this year was a new charity segment. On a trishaw, CDL Deputy CEO Mr Sherman Kwek ferried Sister Florence Wong, from FMDM, and Ms Gracelyn Ng, five-year-old granddaughter of a patient at the Hospice, to much cheer from the crowd.

CDL Deputy CEO Mr Sherman Kwek said, “I am heartened by the support we received from our staff, business associates, friends and the community and I would like to say a heartfelt 'thank you' to all who have contributed so generously to this fundraising drive. Every dollar raised will go towards making a difference to the thousands of patients and care-givers, who benefit from the impactful and far-reaching work of Assisi Hospice.”

CDL and M&C hotels (Copthorne King’s Hotel, Grand Copthorne Waterfront, Orchard Hotel and M Hotel) operated a total of eight food stalls, sponsored lucky draw items, and sold funfair coupons. CBM contributed manpower and expertise in the areas of logistics, cleaning, waste management and security. Other hotels which contributed to the lucky draw prizes include JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach, St. Regis Singapore, M Social Singapore and Studio M Hotel. CDL also rallied the support of its business associates by taking up hospitality packages, while sister companies under Hong Leong Group further lent their support with ticket purchases.
