7.0 Earthquake

On Friday, 30 November, Anchorage experienced a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in the morning at 8:29am. It marked the largest seismic event in the Alaskan municipality since the 9.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the area in 1964.

The Lakefront Anchorage, built in 1986 and located near Lake Spenard, sustained some isolated minor water damage, but quickly reopened for business shortly after the natural disaster. Staff and guests were all evacuated according to plan and returned once all life safety issues were cleared.

General Manager Mr Greg Beltz praised the staff for their quick response and measured composure during the aftermath to ensure the safety and comfort of all guests. Each team member contributed to the outstanding response and recovery effort in the immediate aftermath. As a token of appreciation to the guests and expressing thanks that there were no injuries, Mr Beltz treated the morning staff to gourmet coffee and fresh doughnuts and bought pizza for the afternoon and evening crew.

The earthquake also resulted in a magnitude 5.7 aftershock minutes later and triggered a tsunami warning. Streets and buildings sustained damage, however, no injuries or deaths were reported.
