Studio M Arabian Plaza in Dubai has joined a plastic recycling initiative called Simply Bottles, headed by Dubai-based eco clothing company DGrade.
The hotel will contribute approximately 16,000 plastic bottles every month to DGrade, who will then start the recycling process to convert the single-use plastics into everyday products, such as apparel and bags.
The recycling process involves washing, flaking and melting the plastic to produce short fibres, which are then spun into recycled yarn and woven – just like conventional fabric – to make environmentally-friendly clothing. This recycling initiative helps to reduce plastic in landfills, and also uses 20% less water, 50% less energy, and produces 55% less carbon emissions compared to conventional polyester yarn manufacturing. It takes on average, ten plastic bottles to create one shirt.
Studio M Arabian Plaza General Manager Ms Ursula Chidiac said, “Environmental sustainability is vital in the operations of the hotel. Beyond delivering high-standard hospitality service, we strive to be good stewards of the environment in the way we operate and serve.”
DGrade is a sustainable clothing company that manufactures clothing made exclusively from recycled plastic. The Simply Bottles initiative will also reach out to other businesses, institutions, and schools to increase recycling rates and reduce plastics in landfills.
